Frequently Asked Questions

Waterproofing Questions Answered

Common questions about membrane waterproofing, our services and how we work across greater Melbourne.

Why is PVC sheet membrane better than liquid-applied waterproofing?
PVC sheet membranes are factory-manufactured to a guaranteed, consistent thickness — unlike liquid-applied coatings which are applied on site and highly dependent on workmanship, weather and coverage rates. Liquid membranes commonly fail at laps, corners and penetrations where consistent thickness is hardest to achieve. A heat-welded PVC membrane creates a monolithic, seamless barrier at every joint, leaving no weak points for water to find.
What does “heat-welded” mean?
Heat-welding is the process of fusing two sheets of PVC membrane together using a hot-air gun or automatic welding machine. The heat softens both surfaces, which are pressed together to form a single monolithic bond — stronger than the membrane itself. Unlike adhesive-bonded laps, a heat-welded seam cannot peel, delaminate or open over time, making it the most reliable jointing method available.
Can PVC membrane be installed over an existing failed membrane?
In many cases, yes. PVC sheet membranes like Wolfin IB are compatible with existing substrates including bitumen, and can often be installed directly over a failed system — eliminating costly and disruptive strip-out. Substrate assessment is carried out on every remedial project to confirm compatibility and determine the correct installation method.
How long does a PVC sheet membrane last?
Heat-welded PVC sheet membranes have a proven track record of 30 to 50+ years in service when correctly installed. The material is UV-stable, ozone-resistant, flexible in low temperatures and unaffected by standing water — all critical performance factors for Australian conditions. Longevity depends directly on the quality of installation, particularly at upstands, penetrations and termination details.
What is the difference between PVC-P and TPO/FPO membranes?
PVC-P (plasticised PVC) membranes are flexible, highly weldable and carry the longest track record in the industry — over 50 years. TPO and FPO (polyolefin) membranes are a newer, plasticiser-free generation suited to green roof and potable water applications where plasticiser migration is a concern. Both are heat-welded on site and offer excellent long-term waterproofing performance.
What causes PVC membrane waterproofing to fail?
The most common causes are: upstands not carried high enough above finished surface level; inadequate termination at edges and penetrations; mechanical damage to the membrane surface; and installation by non-accredited applicators without proper training. Membrane material failure is rare — the vast majority of waterproofing failures are workmanship-related, which is why accredited installer status and on-site supervision matter.
